Embracing Adventure: How to Infuse Excitement into Parenting and Life

Parenting often feels like an endless marathon of responsibilities, where our personal dreams take a backseat to the constant demands of family life. But what if there was a way to reignite that spark of excitement and personal growth while still being an amazing parent? It may sound too good to be true, but as I discovered in my recent conversation with Dr. Sam and Jesse McCready, it's not only possible - it's essential for both you and your children.

Let's face it: as parents, we're constantly told to put our children first. While that's important, it shouldn't come at the cost of our own fulfillment. We deserve to feel energized, excited, and fulfilled in our own lives too. After all, happy parents make for happy children, right?

In this blog post, we'll explore how you can inject more adventure and excitement into your life, all while being an awesome parent. We'll draw inspiration from the McCreadys' experiences and discover practical ways to prioritize your dreams without neglecting your family responsibilities.

Redefining Adventure in Parenthood

When we think of adventure, we often picture exotic locations or daring activities. But for parents, adventure can take on a whole new meaning. It's about finding excitement in the everyday, pursuing personal growth, and modeling a life of passion for our children.

Dr. Sam and Jesse McCready have lived this philosophy to the fullest. As Jesse shared:

"We both shared this ambition that we didn't really want to pursue our careers like normal people. And so we both recognized that it was much more important to us to have experiences than to earn a lot of money."

This mindset shift is crucial. It's not about abandoning responsibility, but rather redefining success. For the McCreadys, success meant prioritizing experiences over material wealth. For you, it might mean something different, but the principle remains the same: don't let societal expectations dictate your path.

Overcoming the Fear of Failure

One of the biggest hurdles in pursuing our dreams, especially as parents, is the fear of failure. We worry about the impact on our children, our finances, and our stability. But here's a secret: failure isn't the end; it's often the beginning of something amazing.

Dr. Sam reflected on their first overseas experience:

"Our first overseas living situation together was a job that I took right out of my residency training in Germany, and it was working as a contractor on a US military base in Germany. It was a terrible contract. We absolutely just lost our shirts financially."

Despite the financial setback, Sam emphasized that he "would do it again in a heartbeat." Why? Because the experience was invaluable. It taught them resilience, adaptability, and the confidence to pursue future adventures.

This story resonates with many parents I've worked with in my therapy practice. Often, the fear of failure keeps us stuck in unfulfilling routines. But remember, as the famous author C.S. Lewis once said, "Failures are finger posts on the road to achievement." Your children will learn more from watching you pursue your passions and handle setbacks than they ever would from a life of cautious comfort.

Balancing Family Responsibilities and Personal Dreams

Now, you might be thinking, "That's all well and good, but I have kids to take care of!" And you're absolutely right. The key is finding a balance that works for your family.

For the McCreadys, this meant involving their children in their adventures. They've lived in various countries, exposing their kids to different cultures and ways of life. But you don't need to move across the globe to achieve this balance. It could be as simple as:

  1. Pursuing a hobby: Whether it's painting, writing, or learning a new language, dedicate time each week to your personal interests.

  2. Planning mini-adventures: Weekend trips, local explorations, or even backyard camping can inject excitement into family life.

  3. Involving kids in your passions: If you love cooking, teach your kids to make simple recipes. If you're into fitness, make family workouts a fun routine.

  4. Setting personal goals: Whether it's running a marathon or starting a side business, having personal objectives keeps life exciting.

The key is to make your pursuits a natural part of family life. This way, you're not choosing between your dreams and your family; you're integrating them.

Modeling Self-Care and Personal Growth

One of the most valuable gifts we can give our children is the example of a parent who prioritizes self-care and personal growth. When we take care of ourselves and pursue our passions, we teach our kids the importance of self-love and continuous learning.

Jesse's journey of illustrating their children's book, "Theodore The Sloth Who Wants to Race," is a perfect example. Despite initial self-doubt, she persevered:

"I realized, oh my gosh, like I really, truly believe I could not do this. And it's just because it's so tangible. It's not some abstract like working on myself, which is great, but it's not something you can hold in your hands, right?"

This experience not only resulted in a beautiful book but also taught their children valuable lessons about perseverance, creativity, and the joy of pursuing one's passions.

As parents, we can model self-care through:

  • Regular exercise or meditation routines

  • Pursuing continuing education or new skills

  • Taking time for relaxation and hobbies

  • Setting and working towards personal goals

Remember, self-care isn't selfish. It's necessary for our well-being and sets a powerful example for our children.

Embracing the Messy Middle

Let's be honest: pursuing our dreams while raising a family isn't always smooth sailing. There will be challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt. But it's in these "messy middle" moments that real growth happens.

Dr. Sam shared an insight that resonates deeply with this idea:

"Life is life and it has its ups and downs. You still have to pay your bills or deal with an illness or get your car fixed or whatever, no matter where you are or what you're doing."

This perspective is crucial. Adventure and personal growth don't mean escaping life's realities; they mean embracing them with a positive attitude and a sense of purpose.

Here are some strategies to help you navigate the messy middle:

  1. Celebrate small wins: Acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small.

  2. Practice flexibility: Be ready to adjust your plans when life throws curveballs.

  3. Embrace imperfection: Remember, it's okay if things aren't always picture-perfect.

  4. Seek support: Don't hesitate to lean on your partner, family, or friends when you need help.

  5. Keep the big picture in mind: Remember why you started this journey in the first place.

Creating a Legacy of Adventure and Growth

As we pursue our dreams and embrace adventure, we're not just enriching our own lives; we're creating a lasting legacy for our children. We're showing them that life is full of possibilities, that it's okay to take risks, and that personal growth is a lifelong journey.

Dr. Sam beautifully articulated this idea:

"You wanna make the most of it and hopefully, yeah, get as much as you can out of life and hopefully help others do the same and leave the world at least as good as you found it. Hopefully better than you found it."

This mindset of continuous growth and positive impact is perhaps the greatest gift we can pass on to our children. It teaches them to be curious, resilient, and passionate about life.

Conclusion: Your Adventure Awaits

As we wrap up this exploration of adventure in parenting, I want you to remember that your journey is unique. The McCreadys' story of global adventures might not be your path, and that's perfectly okay. Your adventure could be starting a community garden, learning to play an instrument, or simply finding new ways to connect with your family.

The key is to keep that spark of excitement alive, to nurture your personal growth, and to model a life of passion and purpose for your children. By doing so, you're not just enhancing your own life; you're enriching your entire family's experience.

Remember, it's never too late to start. Your next adventure, big or small, is waiting just around the corner. So take that first step, embrace the unknown, and show your kids the joy of living a life full of growth and excitement. After all, the best adventures are the ones we share with those we love.
